According to Jacobs Media, 70% of podcasts are discovered via Word of Mouth. While social is helpful, it really only helps if you are actively growing your social channel (as most of the people who follow you probably know you have a podcast, and you probably mention it in your description).
"There is no magic podcast bullet." I disagree, if you make astounding podcast content that impacts your audience in a way that they must, 100% MUST tell their friends, that can make your numbers jump. I'm interviewing someone who is close to 10K downloads per episode and he had no audience to start. He is making content that you either love or hate, and he asks his audience to share it with a friend. He's a little under 2 years with his podcast.
