MXR - the regional mux operator -did a massive amount to market DAB with little budget but great support from stations on the mux such as Heart, Galaxy, Smooth, Real, JazzFM, Choice, The Arrow etc. As you say Matt it was left to us, the mux operators, who became known as 'digital radio evangelists' to grow the platform in the early years.Diane Wray, MD MXR until 2012.

Interesting! I wrote a paper in the mid-90s for Ralph Barnard about why we should develop DAB. I was just a lowly presenter on Classic FM, and after a chance conversation with him, he asked me to put my thoughts down on paper (well, Word) and send it to him. It wasn't a masterwork. Just a couple of pages on the advantages I thought it would give us, which, as I saw it then, was mostly the ability to broadcast supporting content. Not just the name of the track being played, but images, documents and maybe interactive apps (don't think we had a name for them then!) that would enable listeners to respond through the Interwebs!
