I wonder if the BBC isn’t that worried about the drops across most of their networks. Sure, they’ll always point to how BBC Sounds is faring but at some point they’ll have to defend focusing more on digital distribution rather than on-the-air one. Critics will only find ammunition in these ratings and say the BBC isn’t providing value for money, and maybe have been terrible people by, say, “shafting” Ken and Steve and all the other veterans in the name of chasing the yoof.
I suppose what’s key in the long run is a third-party audit system for UK podcasts and on-demand listening—should cover Global’s podcast push, and probably Bauer’s and Acast’s too...
