Greetings from Australia

That’s a really interesting point about how the main Australian battleground is still city-based

It was a puzzle for me when I got here from the UK a decade ago. Yet it’s local industry dogma that to win the ratings you need to be both live and local.

Perhaps the biggest single difference between the two countries is the lack of a single national sport here in Australia. Sydney and Brisbane loves NRL. Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide are AFL cities. (Then we all to cricket and tennis in our summer)

The other factor is that we have in Sydney and Melbourne two equally sized cities. Whereas the capital Canberra is too small to even be a major radio battleground.

For practical reasons Australia is edging towards nationally networked shows though.

My prediction on who will crack it first? Christian O’Connell - number one in Melbourne FM and itching to go national…

Thanks for reading Tim! I think sport's an interesting observation, our pop stations, pretty much all of them, never mention it. I imagine because of the risk of offending someone's team.
